Protective masks are of two types: masks for medical use and masks for non-medical use.

The first category corresponds to FFP2 masks and surgical masks while the second category corresponds to general public barrier masks (in fabric).

FFP masks are divided into three categories, according to their effectiveness (estimated according to the effectiveness of the filter and the leaks occurring in the face):

- The FFP1 mask filters at least 80% of particles with a size of 0.6 µm.

- The FFP2 mask filters at least 94% of particles with a size of 0.6 µm

- The FFP3 mask filters at least 99% of particles with a size of 0.6 µm

Just like the FFP2 masks, the KN95 masks are masks designed to provide respiratory protection to the person wearing it.

The KN95 standard is the Chinese standard corresponding to the European standard FFP2.

Thus, just like FFP2 masks, KN95 masks are among the most effective masks against the coronavirus. Their filtration efficiency rate is 95%.  

The FFP2 mask is the only mask that protects both its wearer and its environment thanks to their air filtration rate greater than 95%.

The FFP2 mask filters air in both directions (both inhaled and exhaled air), unlike the surgical mask which filters out only exhaled air.

The surgical mask protects the environment but not the wearer, while the FFP2 mask protects the wearer and the environment.

FFP2 masks consist of several layers of fabric (usually 5, compared to 1 for a fabric mask and 2 to 3 for a surgical mask).

It covers the face better and adapts more easily to individual morphology, allowing the wearer to be protected from their environment.

FFP2 masks filter particles down to 0.4 microns in diameter, or 94% of particles in the air.

For example, scientists estimate that surgical masks trap around 70% of aerosols in the air, compared to 94% for FFP2 masks.

Filtration is also of a better level for FFP2 masks, which means that FFP2 masks capture particles of smaller size than fabric masks or surgical masks. 

According to scientists, FFP2 masks (or masks of equivalent standards, such as KN95) are, due to their particle filtration rate in the air greater than 94%, the most effective masks for effectively protecting themselves from the coronavirus.

However, in situations where wearing a mask is recommended but where the risk is low (for example if you walk in a park only with people in your household), wearing another type of mask may be sufficient to ensure sufficient protection. In this case, cloth masks, washable and reusable, can be recommended because of their less harmful impact on the environment than disposable masks.

An FFP2 mask can be worn for up to 8 hours, compared to a maximum of 4 hours for a surgical mask.

The French and European health authorities advise against reuse of an FFP2 mask, because the mask filter could be damaged and the mask completely ineffective.
